1 Star Phone became hot and died after a few months
I owned this phone for 4 months and loved it. It worked great and made managing my work emails and calendar much easier. However the phone became very hot one day and completely died. I took it back to the Sprint store and they tried a new battery and it would not work. They said that the phone is completely fried and I would have to get a new one. I am very disappointed with this phone.
1 Star It became very hot and died forever after only 6 weeks.
This phone seemed fine for the most part, but after just six weeks it became very hot suddenly, the battery showed it was drained and it died. The verizon store put in a new battery and the same thing happened immediately. Verizon will only replace with a refurbished phone since it is outside the 30 day guarantee. I hope this does not happen again. It is a major time committment to get a new phone and add all the apps, calendar items, etc. I am very disappointed with my first blackberry. I wish I didn’t have a two year committment with verizon!!
5 Stars For the Price its my Favorite Blackberry So Far
Used to have a Pearl with numerous problems, finally had enough of it and decided to upgrade. Sprint has a deal going on right now where you get [...] for your old phone, and since I was over a year due, I got a $[...] rebate too. So my opinion may be a bit skewed as I got this phone for free. Gotta be honest I HATED Blackberry and didn’t understand the attraction to the company when I had my Pearl as it was over-overwhelmingly disappointing since day 1.
Well I’m happy to say that I am probably a permanent fan of the BB thanks to this phone. 1st: Thank god BB got rid of the ball, as the sensor-tracker is 100 times better. My ball would go bad, get dirty, etc. This is probably the best tracker I’ve seen on any phone including the iPhone. I love the BB Messenger capabilities, love the qwerty pad, love the speed of the phone. I have yet to find one flaw regarding the mechanics of this phone. Have downloaded 2 apps thus far for free–Pandora Internet Radio and Google Maps which are must haves (don’t even bother using the Maps app loaded on the phone, its terrible) and both have worked like a charm.
The only thing I miss is the flash for the camera, as it seems my Pearl took excellent photos compared to a lot of other phones. I haven’t had great luck with this one so far, but like I said, its a very small issue compared to the other flaws that have gone away since my upgrade.
Not sure how this phone works on other networks, but Sprint is EXCELLENT. I was with AT&T for years and hated it, and I will never understand its popularity except for the fact its the only network with the never-ending praised, over-rated over-priced iPhone. Sprint may not be popular with the “hip” kids these days (but who cares) however I have nothing but good things to say about Sprint, as its coverage and its service are the best I’ve ever had.
If I had the dough, I might saddle up for the Bold, as it seems to be just like this phone but has a couple better features like a better operating system, a higher mega-pixel camera, better speakers for music, ability for a 32G card, and might last better in the long run. But again, the going price for that is $[...], and how can I complain or compare the 2 when I got mine for free? This Curve is probably the best phone deal of my life.
If you’re a person who hasn’t owned a Blackberry before and you’re looking to get into it without breaking the bank, this IS the phone I recommend. I have friends who have BB’s and like I said I’ve owned one previously too, and this is BY FAR the best one I’ve come upon for the price. These things will be unstoppable when they start supporting Flash, which will blow iPhone out of the water, so hopefully isn’t too far off.
You will love this phone!
5 Stars Reliable, Easy To Use, Fast, Loud, Excellent Sprint Coverage and Service
Besides the lack of a camera flash and a couple other small annoyances, this phone is the perfect entry level BB for myself and my friends. Blackberry has definitely produced a winner in the mass consumer market for their phones.
This phone has pretty much all the features that its competitors have along with its storied and well developed blackberry e-mail system. The fact that it can be had for less than $50 after mail in rebate is an excellent value.
If you’re looking for a phone that keeps you organized, connected to all your family and friends, entertained, and more, this is a great phone. The e-mail, contact lists, and the way all messages are combined into shared boxes is truly efficient and easy to use. The keyboard is responsive and fast..and much better than any touchscreen out there. The only annoyance was the sometimes short battery life, but this is remedied by turning off the WiFi and Bluetooth radios and closing extra applications. In terms of cellphone service coverage, Sprint has truly vastly improved over the last 5 years. I along with my friends took our BB 8530 phones up and down the East Coast and had excellent service the entire way: e-mailing, chatting, texting, sending pics, receiving pics, facebooking, etc. There were a handful of dead spots, but coverage and reliability was rivaling Verizon Wireless (former VZW subscriber of 10 years!)
The fact that unlimited use of their voice command GPS network (LIVE traffic updates and rerouting!) is truly amazing and at least worth $200 in my opinion. Their Sprint TV network is not bad either with various channels that include LIVE ESPN.
Please be aware that Sprint’s Family plans are the best currently on the market. To be able to have unlimited mobile to mobile calling, unlimited texting, unlimited data, for less than $45 per person per month is freaking amazing. If you don’t want to burn your cash on flashier smartphones, get this phone. You won’t regret it
4 Stars Entry Level Blackberry for New Users
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1WW0YMYHWZS7O I picked up the Blackberry Curve 8520 with my corporate discount and walked away with a nice phone at a very reasonable price. I have to say that I really enjoy the web browser on the new BB. You can zoom in & out with ease. I thought no browser could compare to the iPod Safari besides the Android G1, but after getting this device - I can safely say that this browser is also one of the best. Its right behind the safari and G1. Prior models were confined to small screens, thirty-five dollar internet only data plans, and no ability to zoom in or out. You were subjected to a small screen and reading small text till your eyes was squinting like grandmas.
Pros:
Nice price for new smartphone users
Nice fashion colors that only the CURVE series has
3.5 MM headjack
Nice form factor
New OS (ONly 5.0 OS for SPrint and Verizon users)
Decent call quality (No issues yet)
Excellent new broswer
Mini SD up to 16GB (Wish it was 32GB)
Use your songs as ringers
Wi-Fi
Personal Email (Up to 10 accounts can be added)
IM
BB Meesenger
BB App World
Full HTML Web Browser (Sometimes)
Excellent Multimedia Player (Accepts every format possible)
Crystal clear screen for playing videos
Includes 2 chargers (Wall Charger & USB charger)
Includes ear phones
Cons:
For long time BB users, this device is really just a cosmetic upgrade with a new OS (Flashier Icons)
Micro USB (No more Mini USB)
No Flash on the camera
Only one theme
Feels like a plastic toy
No threaded text messaging
Poor screen resolution
Non RIMM Consumer Changes Mind!
No 3G (ONly 3G for Sprint and Verizon users)
Good entry level smartphones for new users who want to save without paying the high price. However, Verizon has pricey data and text messenging plans which are a requirement. Its hard to justify the plan prices for such an average entry level device.

5 Stars Fantastic phone for those in need of a GPS
I’ve had this phone for about a week now and quite honestly, I love it. It’s not as advanced as some of the other Android OS phones on the market, but it definitely gets the job done. It has it’s own user interface that is pretty easy to navigate and runs off of the old Android OS 1.6. The main reason for my purchase of this phone was I needed a stand alone GPS to navigate around the Baltimore/DC area and was getting tired of my Blackberry 8900. The other big thing that got me on-board was the fact that if I ever felt the need to upgrade my phone again this unit works as a stand alone GPS without the need for a sim card! The prospect of always having a GPS after a $450 purchase made it an easy buy for me. I read quite a few reviews on this phone and everyone seemed to be impressed with how well the GPS worked, so I figured I’d give it a try. So far I’ve used it three times and I can tell you, it’s pretty darn good. The phone also comes with separate home AND car chargers, I mention this because the T-Mobile site is a bit vague as far as what is packaged (Although the home chargers cord is very short). As far as the multitasking options and networking, Facebook isn’t as streamlined as it is on blackberry, but there are pro’s and con’s to both I suppose. Those are easily remedied by updates that have nothing to do with which operating system you have on this phone though. As far as syncing e-mails, wi-fi, and bluetooth; all of that is pretty easy. The only real downer is that it’s 3.0 megapixel camera doesn’t have a flash and doesn’t take the best of pictures, but my need for a gps outweighs my need for a camera. I rarely used the 3.2 MP on my blackberry and it took pretty decent pictures. My only concern thus far with this phone is that I am an Electrician and work with my hands in pretty dirty locations so I imagine sooner or later I’ll scratch it or drop it, but such is the case with any phone I buy. If you’re in the need of a GPS with a few nice networking capabilites, and you aren’t too concerned with running several Android programs or taking pictures, this phone is definitely for you.
5 Stars Garminfone does it all.
The garminfone does it all and many of it’s best features are true gems. Most importantly, there is NO comparison in terms of navigation and location based services with the built in maps. That means that even without coverage, navigation works perfectly. Other navigation software like google’s android based system don’t even compare. I also love the fact that the phone comes with a dashboard mount, so the phone is always charging so you probably won’t have to charge it at home if you spend significant time in your car. The phone has a reliable and rugged form that seems break resistant compared to other smart phones. The sound quality is the best and speakerphone while in the cradle is excellent. By comparison, the Samsung might look better, but it’s just bells and whistles. The Garminfone get’s the job done and that’s what’s important to me with a reliable custom android interface.
3 Stars A good 2nd gen device in a sea of 3rd gens.
After my G1 bricked a 2nd time, I went on a small journey to review some T-Mobile phone replacements. The Garminfone and MyTouch Slide 3G are the two I’ve chosen, and this is what I’ve found about the Garminfone after two weeks.
First, it’s light, much lighter than a G1 by feel and likely due to the absence of a physical keyboard. Asus and Garmin have done a splendid job designing a pretty phone, and it looks terrific.
The second thing I’d notice is that the Garmin-designed interface is targeting casual or non-technical users, so it didn’t resonate with me. It’s just a point to consider: you can download ADW Launcher and ditch the Garmin home screen and UI for the most part, and gain a pretty powerful launcher in the process.
Third, Android 1.6 with 2.1 features is nice but not a sustainable solution for the phone long-term. I know why Garmin went the way they did: they were challenged to integrate their own legacy GPS software and mapping into an Android container, and had access to the 2.1 SDK and so rolled their own 1.6 version. However, it will be quite some time, if ever, that this phone received a true 2.1 base. Whether you notice it or not is largely irrelevant; understand that you won’t be moving to Froyo or beyond.
Fourth, the hardware is fairly fast, faster than I expected with an average CPU (600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227, the same used in the MyTouch Slide 3G). It’s not a 1Ghz Snapdragon, but I was surprised at how quickly it would return UI changes for me. The memory is 256Mb of RAM and 4Gb of internal storage, 458Mb of it dedicated to apps. If you were missing Apps2SD, this makes up for it somewhat. It also supports microSD, of course.
Fifth, the device is a PND replacement, by design. The included car dock snaps on and provides a landscape orientation and charging port, with the standard bulb swivel and a stick-on base if your dash doesn’t have a smooth surface for the suction cup. You might need a longer USB cable but in practice with a 2002 Neon ACR I didn’t need anything longer. The Garmin maps are offline, which is a huge advantage over Google navigation as you can use this device in the wild — all you need is a charged battery and some sky. Navigation is just fine, accurate and precise, with some nice features like local speed limits and traffic. In truth traffic didn’t really work, but traffic is a hard problem for anyone to solve. As a personal navigation device I’d wholly recommend this.
Overall, I liked it but missed the physical keyboard. Swipe and Graffiti work terrific on this, and the device ran all of my own apps without incident. The included Garmin widgets and its version of a home screen are not worth keeping, and should be easier to ditch in favor of a generic home screen. The widgets, when working, were nice but unremarkable. The battery life was decent, not spectacular, and there is no way to disable 3G to conserve power (another shortcoming of rolling your own OS version). It also seems as if the device is languishing in the market, so I’d wait to see if Garmin-Asus update this to 2.1 before committing myself to a contract for one.

5 Stars Great for what it was intended for
This is a great GPS phone! People who do not like this phone don’t understand the function of this phone. I got my to use with a T-mobile prepaid plan. Most Android phones require a data plan to use Google’s navigation programs. The Garminfone has maps of the North America preloaded with points of interest on the phone. This means no data plan required for the GPS function. It also means if you travel to areas here there is spotty cell coverage, such as forests, campgrounds mountains…etc. the GPS continue to work.
I recently used this phone for a week in south Florida and it found all my destinations and got me to some good restaurants, super markets and banks with no problem. Due to the fast processor on the phone (as compared to stand alone GPS units), course recalculation is lighting fast! Usually within one block!
One last thing that rarely gets mentioned is that this is a great Phone! The sound quality is excellent! The speaker phone is loud! And I have not experienced a single dropped call in 2 months.

4 Stars Favorite Phone
Pros:
1. Satellite base GPS, no data required if you buy it used or without contract.
2. Android OS, a lot of free apps.
3. Loud and clear speaker phone.
4. Just the right size for a to go GPS and comfortable to hold.
5. Wifi is very fast.
6. The email program is easy to set up.
7. The GPS works just as well as the NUVI series.
Con:
1. Alarm does not work if the phone is off. I learned the hard way.
2. 3 MP camera only.
3. No flash for camera.
4. Only 4 GB of internal memory and only 1.6GB available prevent it from being a do it all device.
5. GPS for some reasons have no sound a sometimes. Probably due to glitches.
6. Unlimited menu customization.
7. Battery life.

You won’t regret it
5 Stars For the Price its my Favorite Blackberry So Far
4 Stars A great starter Blackberry!
The trackpad on this model takes some getting used to after the trackball. However, the area beneath the trackball seems to be nothing more than a reservoir of filth that has to be constantly cleaned in order to keep it working at optimal performance. So the trackpad is definitely a step up once you get comfortable with it. The smaller keys may also require some adjustment, and those with dexterity or vision issues may want to consider a phone with larger buttons & display.
For the tech-savvy, most of the features will be a no-brainer, but if you need help figuring out the controls, probably the most useful page in the various booklets included is page 2 of the “Getting Started” booklet with the traffic light on the cover. This page clearly diagrams where each button on the phone is and what it does. Chances are if you check this page, you won’t need any of the other instructions. If all else fails, I’ve found the folks at the Sprint stores are more than willing to show you how to access any feature you may be having trouble with.
It comes with a wire headset that you probably won’t use since everyone seems to be stuck on bluetooth headsets. However, I find that having the phone attached to the headset keeps me from walking off and leaving the phone in another room, losing my connection, and the sound is much clearer on both ends. You also get a wall charger, as well as a USB charger cable that doubles as a sync cable– very nice touch.
The camera on this phone, as with most phones, is useless except for throwaway images & videos at only 2.0 megapixel resolution. It’s great to take pictures of fender-benders or temporary images. but don’t trust this camera to preserve priceless family moments that will never come again– especially without the flash included on earlier Blackberry models. I see it as a convenience, not as a replacement for my regular camera.
I also don’t care to use this as a replacement for my iPod, but I am someone who runs my iPod mostly from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. It’s hardly practical to run the battery down on my phone listening to music. I don’t use the wi-fi either– again, I use a separate device for wi-fi access, so this may not be a practical solution for you. However, disabling the wi-fi and not using this as my primary MP3 player seems to have improved my battery life. If you want to use this phone as a full strength multi-functional device, you may need to invest in a more powerful battery for it if indeed one is available.
As far as apps are concerned, Blackberry isn’t going to put Apple out of business any time soon, but there is definitely potential for exponential growth as more and more apps become available. I’ve installed a couple of freebie apps so far, and I can see how they can become addictive. Since apps are third party products, be sure to read reviews, and don’t go app crazy downloading anything just because you can.
The phone does feel a little flimsy, with the battery cover popping out way too easily for my taste. Sure, a case or silicone wrap will help with this, but this really shouldn’t be a problem considering it wasn’t an issue on previous models. Get the insurance on whatever phone you get and give yourself come peace of mind.
Sprint has been a pleasure to use for me. I know all services have horror stories depending on personnel, company policy and how well coverage is in your area, but Sprint has always been reliable and its in store representatives exemplary of qualtiy customer service. Their plans are just what we needed for our business, and the folks at the Lake Plaza Drive store in Indianapolis are friendly, helpful and I actually look forward to going in whenever I need help.
Bottom line: This is an entry-level Blackberry, great for beginners like myself, but experienced Blackberry users may want to consider a higher-end model. For me this phone serves all my needs and satisfies my need for gadgetry at the same time.

User Ratings and Reviews
4 Stars GPS + Android make for a good combination
The Garminfone is an excellent GPS unit and a “good” smart phone in one. If you are looking for a high end android device, this might not be the best phone for you because it runs version 1.6 of Android. If you need both a GPS and smart phone this is worth a serious look.
Pros:
Corporate email works well
There is plenty of storage space for downloading apps
If you happen to be out of cell signal range the GPS will continue to work
Comes with car charger and vehicle mount
The screen size is just right @ 3.5″
Cons:
Cannot customize the home screen other than the sidebar
Does not have 3.5mm headphone jack
